Ramayana on Mobile Phone
Reading the Ramayana during the Malayalam month of Karkkidakom
would
no longer be a ritualistic affair confined to homes. You can read
the epic poem from wherever you are. And you do not need to carry
the heavy book.
P.R.Harikumar, a selection grade lecturer in the Malayalam
Department of Sree Sankara College, Kalady, has fed all the`kandas'
of the Adhyatma Ramayana in Malayalam into his mobile phone. Now,
one can simply browse the entire epic in a mobile screen. It would
occupy a space of only 340 KB while an MP 3 song would occupy 4 MB
space.
Harikumar has always been interested in reading Malayalam articles and poems on his mobile phone. It was during one of his Internet browsing that he came across an e-book reader, which helps download Internet files, pages or text files to a Java-enabled mobile phone. This prompted him to try and put the Ramayana into his mobile.
This is the first book, which is converted into a mobile edition in any Indian language. As a Malayalam teacher he feels very happy in transferring this epic into a mobile edition. The Ramayana on the mobile as developed by Harikumar is at present not available to the public through any mobile phone service provider.
Harikumar feels that Malayalam language would find a new avenue through such usage and it would not be long when short message service in Malayalam would become popular. He continues his experiments for making this kind of editions for some other works written in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu.
